Bananas and plantains (platanos) are one of the most important food staples in the Dominican diet. They reached the island in 1516. Spanish colonizers imported them from Western Africa. Platanos (Musa) are very rich in carbohydrates, vitamin C, A, and B. They also contain important minerals, including potassium, copper, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Platanos are a high yield fruit. In the same land one can harvest 98 pounds of potatoes, one can harvest 4,400 pounds of bananas. Interestingly enough, some cultures believe platanos are an aphrodisiacal fruit, not only because of their mystical phallic shape, but because they are rich in potassium and vitamin B essential in the production of sexual hormones.
