One of a complex of gates and defensive walls built in the late 1500's to protect the city of Santo Domingo. It was originally known as "La Puerta Grande." On February 27, 1844 a group of Dominican heroes met at this gate to march to La Puerta del Conde (Conde Gate) to proclaim Dominican Independence.
