El Bohio Dominicano - A Visual Archive of the Dominican Republic
Juguetes Folkloricos Dominicanos
Toys
Author/Photographer: Jaime Jimenez

Photographer Jaime Jimenez has spent three years learning from children in the Dominican Republic and photographing the hand made toys and games that spring from their imaginations. Fearing the loss of this creative process in favor of mass-produced toys, Mr. Jimenez has traveled extensively in the Dominican Republic to collect and document these treasures of bottle caps, boxes and wire. The idea for this project was to comment on the children's playtime (with toys and games that need the aid of imagination), celebrating this often overlooked and slowly dying form of art. The emphasis is not on poverty but on creativity and ingenuity, capturing the act of imagination at its pure moment.
