Tail lobbing and flipper slapping are behaviors thought to be important in communication between humpback individuals. Their flukes (tails) are the largest of any whale species. They can measure up to 18 feet in width. Marine biologists observe a whale’s fluke to identify individuals due to their unique colors and markings.
