Era de Trujillo II
Album de Oro 1944-1957
By Otto Piron and Daniel Piron
Special Thanks to La Biblioteca Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña
Warning: The images you are about to see are a collection of photos found in an annual publication called “Album de Oro,” produced and edited by the Trujillo regime. This publication was, essentially, a propaganda tool to show Trujillo, his family, and his government in the best light. Thus, El Album de Oro, hides the dark side of Trujillo’s era. It does not show the torture chambers Trujillo used to cow his critics and political opponents into submission. It will not show the photos of men and women who lost their lives for standing up against whom they believed to be a megalomaniac tyrant. Neither will you see photos of thousands of Haitian workers who were massacred by Trujillo’s racial cleansing policies. However, these pictures do show a part of our Dominican history worth revisiting and studying as long as one keeps the proper perspective in mind. Some of these images have not been seen in more than 50 years.
If you want to learn more about the era of Trujillo and the Album de Oro, you can pay a visit to La Biblioteca Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña (National Library P.H.U.) in Santo Domingo. El-Bohio.com is grateful to the National Library’s staff for their prompt and cordial assistance in this project. Las Hermanas Mirabal |
