Total devastation is all that is left in the wake of the worst tropical storm to hit the Dominican Republic in recorded history. This photo shows the effects of the storm along la calle San Carlos in barrio Villa Francisca, Santo Domingo. It is said that over 8, 000 people lost their lives in this terrible natural disaster. It also marks the beginning of the Trujillo regime. This was the first big national crisis faced by Trujillo. He eventually rebuilt the city, which was later renamed after him: Ciudad Trujillo.
